Happy Tuesday : ) If you missed the first part of Elesha and Ron’s San Diego engagement photos be sure to check those out. Elesha and Ron shared their insights into their planning for their session with us, you’ll not want to miss their introduction! These adorable high school sweethearts have a very distinct vintage and modern style. When developing their engagement session with us, they put a lot of time and thought and planning into their session, which is always great, because we love being able to create a session that captures just what the couple was looking for. Elesha and Ron brought one of the coolest props we’ve ever had the pleasure of photographing … a vintage 1938 Buick. Just the kind of care my grandfather was always restoring. Love it!!! Here are the photos we created with these two lovebirds. We think Elesha and Ron did a great job thinking ahead about the type of outfits that would work well with this car. Congratulations you two! We can’t wait for your wedding later this year!!! xoxo

Happy Monday everyone! We are a little bummed that the Steelers lost the Super Bowl but we’re happy to start the week with part one of a fantastic San Diego engagement session. Elesha and Ron will be getting married later this year at one of our favorite Temecula vineyard wedding venues, Ponte Winery. We love their sense of style and the fact that they really put a lot of thought and work into their session with us. You’re not going to want to miss this post! We asked Elesha and Ron for some of their insights into their wedding planning and into their preparations for their engagement session. These two high school sweethearts are adorable … enjoy!

{us} How did you meet?

{Elesha+Ron} We have known each other since High School starting off as a High School crush…very innocent puppy love. It wasn’t until seven years ago that we reconnected and what started off as a date became something so much more.

{us} When did you get engaged?

{Elesha+Ron} We got engaged at Elesha’s graduation party on July, 10, 2010. It was a surprise engagement with our closest family and friends to witness the proposal.

{us} Which of your two is the wedding planner?

{Elesha+Ron} Elesha by far : )

{us} Are you enjoying the planning?

{Elesha+Ron} I am embracing every moment of the wedding planning process. I am one to be pretty organized so there hasn’t been any stress thus far…knock on wood. Ron’s there for moral support. LOL!

{us} When searching for your photographer, what made you choose us?

{Elesha+Ron} The style was the #1 reason. We were looking for a style that was fresh, something different from your typical enagement/wedding photos. We know that Betwixt can deliver that style that eminates our personality best.

{us} Were you nervous before your engagement session?

{Elesha+Ron} A bit. We were more excited than anything. Having the 1938 Buick was so exciting and just adds character to the vintage style we were going for.

{us} What did you do to plan for your session with us?

{Elesah+Ron} We coordinated our outfits, brought accessories (i.e. hats), props (i.e. balloons & 1938 Buick), had makeup and hair done, and worked with Betwixt on locations that went with the style we were looking for (i.e. North Park).

{us} What fun things did you incorporate in your session?

{Elesah+Ron} I think the main thing were the props. Props were big for our engagement session because it definitely portrayed the vintage style we were going for. We also wanted an urban feel to it and wanted to highlight colors in our picture, thus the balloons and colorful outfits.

{us} How would you describe the style of your session?

{Elesah+Ron} Vintage.

{us} Any advice for other brides and grooms?

{Elesah+Ron} Know what style you’re going for so you can best incorporate that in your pictures through your outfits, props, location, etc. Be bold and have fun.

{us} Tell us about your wedding!

{Elesha+Ron} Our modern vintage wedding is going to be at a vineyard giving it a romantic & fun feel. We will have about 150 of our closest family and friends to help celebrate our special day. We want our guests to remember our wedding as being unique and most of all FUN! We just want to have a great time!

{Elesha+Ron} Betwixt has been extremely proffesional, personable, and a pleasure to work with. We have a sense of assurance with working with them. They see our vision for what we are looking for in our engagement/wedding pictures in capturing the moment. They are passionate about their work and it is clear that they are more than experienced in their field of work. We couldn’t be happier and we are looking forward to working with them on THE BIG DAY!

{us} Thanks guys!!! We are so excited and honored to be working with you and are looking forward to your wedding!!! And stay tuned for Part 2 of this San Diego engagement session!! xoxo

Happy Monday everyone!!! We are super excited to share a vintage San Diego Engagement Session. Whitney and Ryan are a super cool couple from San Diego who share a lot of things in common, like their love of the San Diego Chargers … sorry about the Playoffs, guys! Another is their love of travel and Scrabble. When Whitney told us about her interest in doing a vintage engagement picnic we jumped at the chance! For their San Diego engagement photos they brought a vintage picnic basket and vintage soda bottles along with a Scrabble game, a couple of pomegranates and a handmade vintage quilt. The perfect setting for their vintage picnic! Whitney shared some thoughts with us about her engagement session and wedding planning. We are excited to share her insights and advice : )

{us} How did you meet?

{Whitney} Ryan lived in Ocean Beach before moving to Colorado for a couple years. While he was living in Denver, I moved into the same apartment complex he had lived in. Ryan came back to San Diego and moved back into the complex, two apartments down. One night he came by to borrow a veggie chopper to make won tons, and when he brought it back he had made up a cute plate for me. (They were delicious and I was impressed!) After leaving some encouraging notes on my car, we finally started hanging out and the rest is history in the making!

{us} When did you get engaged?

{Whitney} We went to Italy in September to take a vacation and to visit with Ryan’s parents, who live there. While we were there we celebrated our two year anniversary, and took a ferry over to the island of Capri. At the top of the island while exploring the Villa San Michele before sunset, I sat down to pose for a picture and he pulled a ring box out of his pocket! It couldn’t have been more perfect or romantic.

{us} WOW!!!

{us} Which of you two is the wedding planner?

{Whitney} I think we would both agree that it has been me! Ryan has been taking care of huge parts though, and lets me go on all-day wedding planning benders without (much) complaint : )

{us} Are you enjoying the planning?

{Whitney} For the most part! We’ve hit some snags along the way, but a lot of it has been easy. We’re making our own wine for the wedding with the help of a friend, so that part has been really fun! I’m enjoying focusing more on the fun details as the day gets closer.

{us} When searching for your photographer, what made you choose us?

{Whitney} We wanted our photos to reflect our personalities, and to show the love we have for each other. Your pictures were so fun and vibrant, and we instantly fell in love.

{us} Were you nervous before your engagement session?

{Whitney} I’m not going to lie, we were nervous! We didn’t really know what to expect, and wanted to look as natural as possible. You guys make everyone look great, so we knew we were in good hands : ) We were a little nervous before the shoot, but you immediately put us at ease and we didn’t feel like such nerds. Okay, Ryan still felt a little nerdy but we both had a great time : ) Choosing you both to capture our special day has been one of the best decisions we have made!

{us} What did you do to plan for your session with us?

{Whitney} I probably spent four hours in front of the closet obsessing over wardrobe options! My sister loaned me some great things from her enviable closet, and it was hard to narrow it down. Ryan would come looking for me, and I’d be standing there asking, “What about this, with this? And this dress with that shirt?” Ryan was a great sport and I used this as an opportunity to buy him some cute new clothes. My sweet friend Sabrina came over before the shoot and did my hair and makeup (Thanks S!)

{us} What fun things did you incorporate in your session?

{Whitney} We also set up a little picnic, and played a game of Scrabble- our favorite. And our dog Ernie! He is quite a model, and the shots you guys got of him are some of our favorites from the whole day!

{us} How would you describe the style of your session?

{Whitney} Outdoors, Relaxes, Fun and Romantic!

{us} Any advice for other brides and grooms?

{Whitney} Don’t worry, it will all be over soon : ) Just kidding!! Have as much fun as possible, don’t obsess about the small stuff, and don’t second guess yourself too much. If you love it, do it!

{us} Tell us about your wedding!

{Whitney} We are getting married at the First Baptist Church of Ocean Beach in April. Our reception is going to be held indoor/outdoor at a private estate on Sunset Cliffs that we have for the whole weekend. It is directly across from the ocean, and couldn’t be more beautiful. We love that we get to celebrate our union in a city we love so much, with our family and closest friends.

Happy Monday everyone! We are so excited about 2011!! Tto kick this year off in style, we are blogging Audrey and Mike’s super awesome modern San Diego engagement photos. We asked Audrey to help fill us in on her wedding planning and to give us some insight into her engagement session with us. You are going to LOVE all the juicy details she gave us!!

{us} How did you meet?

{audrey} Okay, don’t laugh…we met on the corner of Garnet and Everts Streets in Pacific Beach after a night out.  Introduced by Mike’s college friend James, there was an immediate mutual intrigue that led to a seven-hour phone call the next night, a first date the night after that, and, as they say, the rest is history.  :-)

{us} When did you get engaged?

{audrey} For months, we had looked forward to our “Going Away” party as an opportunity to celebrate our adventurous move across the country for law school.  We sent invitations out to far too many people, much to the consternation of Mike’s parents.  Food was ordered, drinks abounded, and the guest list was bulging.  We were thrilled for this day.  Everyone in attendance knew how hard we had worked not only to get into law school, but to get into law school TOGETHER.  The time had come to celebrate and say our goodbyes.

In true “Mike and Audrey” fashion, everyone was having a great time…young to old.  Music played, people chatted, kids played, and suddenly…it all stopped.  Mike’s dad stopped the party and asked everyone to gather around the pool for a special toast.  We made our way to the front and listened as his dad toasted to our our accomplishments, our adventure, and our love.  He presented us with an insanely beautiful and special handmade quilt, a gift given to only the most special of people on the most special of occasions.  Mike’s mom then presented us with a beautiful crystal candlestick inscribed with “Mike <3 Audrey” on one side and “Audrey <3 Mike” on the other.  It all seemed quite routine for a going away party until…

Mike, fully clothed, jumped into the pool.  Stunned and a bit confused, Audrey looked to all those standing nearby for some indication of what was going on.  Everyone else was equally as confused!  And then, Mike, in his commanding “Big Mike” voice called for quite amongst the fifty-plus guests in attendance.

“Audrey…Michelle…Day…will…you…marry…me?” he asked, as he dropped (almost) to one knee in the shallow end of the pool.  Cheers rang out and, of course, Audrey said…well, sobbed…”Yes!”  And, after a family dip in the pool…here we are!

{us} Which one of you two is the wedding planner?

{audrey} Definitely Audrey, although Mike has been uber-patient and helpful in making important decisions on all fronts.

{us} Are you enjoying the planning?

{audrey} Loving it!  It’s been so fun designing an event that will create lifetime memories for us and our families as we start our life together.  There’s a TON to think about and we are so thankful that we have such a tremendous team of people supporting us every step of the way.

{us} Any advice for other brides and grooms?

{audrey} Have fun! To keep yourselves on track, sit together and make a list of a few elements of your event that are most important to you and keep those foremost in your mind every step of the way.  Remember that this day is about celebrating your love and sharing it with the people most special to you.

{us} When picking your photographer, what made you choose us?

{audrey} We really wanted a photographer that was fresh, edgy, and modern to reflect our style.  Betwixt images consistently jumped out at us as we browsed magazines and websites.  Once we had a chance to sit down with the two of you, we felt an immediate personal connection and knew that there was no other choice for us but Betwixt.

{us} Were you nervous before the engagement session?

{audrey} A little…okay, a lot!  Neither of us really knew what to expect and I think we both worried we’d feel like big goofs wandering around pretending to be models.  But…it turned out to be such a blast!

{us} What did you do to plan for your session?

{audrey} Shopped!  We spent hours looking for dynamic and colorful outfits that worked well together and really captured our personalities.  We also had to find stylish and funky collars and leashes for our babies, Bink and Stink, who had to be part of the session!  For Audrey, preparation meant SHOE SHOPPING!  For Mike, preparation meant hours of browsing and a late-night fashion show the night before the session.

{us} Tell us about your wedding!!

{audrey} Our planning has revolved around our venue space, Culy Warehouse, which is the most fabulous blank slate a modern bride could dream of.  Finding Culy was the first step in our planning and immediately inspired us to work toward a swanky, loungy, yet glam and very hip feel with touches of romance, all elaborately organized by Heather Balliet and her fabulous team at Amorology.  Our guests will be welcomed with a “red carpet” walk complete with a step-and-repeat and paparazzi to kick off our Hollywood glam-inspired event that will feature lounge furniture by Concepts Event Design, and fun lighting and the sounds of thumping music to shake their groove-thang to, courtesy of Tim Altbaum.  Omar Guido of Crown Point Catering has put together a fabulous menu that will have our guests up and mingling, along with a tremendous array of yummy desserts.  Robin Mathis of Twigg Botanicals is working her magic with florals and decor to infuse Culy with romance and softness.  Courtney Bright-Scowby of Brightly Designed has already helped us set the tone for our event with fabulous save-the-dates, and will bring even more flair to our invitations and day-of paper goods.  Mike and I want our guests to leave Culy Warehouse after our big day exclaiming, “That was SO Mike and Audrey!”  This event is about us and our love…what better way to celebrate than in “red carpet” style?!

Aimee and Seth got married last year, and thought it would be really fun to do a Trash the Dress session with us for Aimee’s birthday : ) Since the adorable Aimee and Seth live in La Jolla, they wanted us to capture them in their neighborhood. They also brought their super cute pup, Patch, along for the ride and we had a blast hanging out with the three of them!

As you can see in these photos, we didn’t per se “Trash the Dress”, so if you were on the fence, don’t be. Trashing the dress can vary and be customized to what you are comfortable with. This type of session gives you the perfect excuse to put on your lovely wedding dress again (which is always a plus! :) and it provides a much more relaxed atmosphere than the hustle and bustle of the portraits you have taken on your wedding day. You can almost say that this is an engagement session with your wedding dress on! So, if you have been looking for another occasion to wear your wedding dress, this might be right up your alley!

It was another beautiful day in San Diego when we met up with Justine and Ryan in Downtown San Diego to capture their urban San Diego engagement photos. Justine and Ryan brought their adorable pups for the session and they were a blast to hang out with… well, maybe except for just a second when Oprah (the black one) tried to bite my ankle LOL! But it’s all good. Maurice and I have nothing but love for Oprah : )

Justine and Ryan are high school sweethearts that will be tying the knot next year in Lake Tahoe. Congratulations you two!

Welcome to day two of Danielle and Scott’s St. Regis Princeville Resort Destination wedding blog-o-bration! If you missed the start of this four-day Hawaii wedding post, be sure to check out Danielle and Scott’s night out in Hanalei and wedding rehearsal. So the morning after our arrival, Maurice and I scouted the North Shore of Kaua’i and Hanalei town to discover some amazing spots for their photo shoot … a Hawaiian engagement portrait session to capture the couple in one of their favorite spots on Earth. We started at the St. Regis at the private beach enclave with its Paradise worthy view of Hanalei Bay. The hammock, palm trees, lava rock, oh my! Just put a Mai Tai in my hand and I feel transported right back there : ) After that we went exploring … down into Hanalei town and on further up the road to a little deserted private beach. It was so much fun.

Stay tuned! Posts featuring their wedding and the island art we had the opportunity to capture are coming up! For now, enjoy these : )

On another gorgeous day in Southern California (seriously, it’s ALWAYS amazing here!), Maurice and I ventured up to Newport Beach in Orange County and took the ferry to Balboa Island to meet up with Jennifer and Joshua. If you’ve never been to Balboa Island, you should definitely plan a day to go. It’s a beautiful and fun place to hang out and walk around and feel like a tourist in your own neighborhood! You can even visit the Balboa Fun Zone – perfect for kids of all ages! Not to mention has an awesome view of the Pacific Ocean.

Aside from being fun and scenic, Balboa Island has a special meaning to Jennifer and Joshua, since when Jennifer first moved to Orange County, she lived here. We had a ton of fun hanging out with this super sweet couple in and around Balboa Island.

Jennifer and Joshua were married shortly after we shot their engagement photos in at a Private Estate in Calabasas. Stay tuned for their wedding, it’s coming up next!

We met up with Micaela and Kyle in Downtown San Diego to capture their engagement photos. Kyle is a wine professional and Micaela (all you Knotty brides will LOVE this) works at The Knot! They love wine and wanted to include a glass of goodness in their engagement photos. So we started downtown, made a fun visit to Cafe Chloe, and generally had a fabulous time capturing these two – get this – high school sweethearts!! Just like Micaela’s parents, Micaela and Kyle met in high school. They were destined for one another. They recently got married at University of San Diego‘s Founder’s Chapel and had their reception at the Grand Del Mar.

We started this adorable couple’s engagement session at Cafe Chloe, which is this great wine cafe in Downtown San Diego. Kyle is a sommelier, so it was a perfect place to start the session out. After spending some time there, we hung out in and around Downtown San Diego and eventually ended up in Little Italy.

Enough talk, here’s the pictures!

It was a beautiful day in San Diego when we met up with Sabina and Chris to capture their edgy, urban engagement photos. Sabina and Chris were recently married at the Darlington House, an elegant, intimate and character filled wedding venue in La Jolla.

Sabina and Chris are totally meant for each other, something you can sense as soon as you meet them. They are also super fun and brought lots of different outfits for their engagement photo shoot. From Chris’s hats to the B-Boy outfits, they were HOT!

You may or may not have seen Chris before, but for sure you’ve heard his voice because he’s a radio DJ! Maurice and I love his voice and it was definitely cool to put a face to the voice that we have heard on the radio. You also may have recognized this couple because we had designed their invitations! You can check out their wedding invitations by clicking here.

Sabina + Chris: Congratulations and we can’t wait to see you again!

It was a sunny day in San Diego when we met up with Tanya and Joe to shoot their engagement photos : ) We met up with this super cute couple in North County and walked around Carlsbad and Oceanside capturing the two of them. We always want to incorporate fun props into our engagement photo shoots and beach cruisers are a super fun way to go!

Tanya and Joe recently got married at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club, one of our favorite San Diego wedding venues. Congratulations Tanya and Joe!

Maurice and I met up with Kelsie and Marshall to capture their engagement photos at one of San Diego’s beautiful stretches of beach and coastline. Since they would be getting married at the San Clemente Presbyterian Church, they knew they wanted to include some of San Diego’s beautiful natural beauty in their engagement photos. They wanted something fun, fresh, and colorful, not too formal, and they also wanted to include Marshall’s Camaro :)

I know this might sound cheesy, but we really do enjoy spending time with each of our couples and Kelsie and Marshall were no exception. Kelsie is a school teacher and Marshall is a research scientist, so we had lots to talk about. They are super easy-going and obviously have a lot of love and respect for one another, which is always fun to see and capture! Since Kelsie and Marshall were recently married, we wish them both a huge CONGRTAULATIONS!!! We were so excited to get to be part of your special day!!
